Description: The 1972 Yamaha DS7 is a standout from Yamaha’s early two-stroke performance era — a lightweight, high-revving machine that helped define small-capacity sports bikes of the 1970s.
This particular example has a unique and well-documented history. Originally sourced from North Dakota in the United States and imported into Australia via a Queensland-based vintage motorcycle importer, it was acquired by the current owner in 2022 before being transported to Rockingham for a full restoration.
Importantly, the bike retains matching engine and frame numbers, adding to its authenticity and collector appeal.
The restoration has been carried out to a very high standard, with significant mechanical and cosmetic work completed. The engine received a top-end refresh including new standard pistons and rings, with the bores retaining visible crosshatching. The bottom end was inspected, a new clutch fitted, and components refinished with correct high-temperature coatings.
Cosmetically, the bike has been returned to its original Mandarin Orange using traditional methods — not decals — with hand-applied striping and multiple clear coats to achieve a deep, high-quality finish. Key original components such as the handlebars, grips, speedometer and tachometer have been retained, while chrome elements have been refinished and consumables replaced, including cables, spark plugs and tyres.
The carburettors have been fully serviced, ensuring the bike runs and rides as intended.
Presented today in what can only be described as near museum condition, this DS7 is a rare opportunity to secure a beautifully restored example of a classic Yamaha — ideal for collectors, enthusiasts, or display.
Adding further value, a set of first oversize pistons and rings will also be included with the sale.
